Former Left Bloc MP Joana Mortágua refuted on Wednesday allegations that passengers from a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza participated in parties in Ibiza, accusing Liberal Initiative MP Mário Amorim Lopes of lying.
“Mário Amorim Lopes said [on Tuesday] that Mariana’s boat (Mariana Mortágua, BE coordinator) stopped in Ibiza for a party. Well, that’s a lazy lie,” she remarked during a segment on the NOW channel, where the IL MP was also present.
Joana Mortágua presented a map showing the route of the boats, indicating Ibiza’s location and the vessels’ path, emphasizing they did not pass near the island. “None of them stopped in Ibiza at all.”
“Moreover, the existence of the party itself was completely denied. Mário Amorim Lopes now claims, ‘oh no, it wasn’t in Ibiza, it was in Menorca.’ Caught in a lazy lie, he now says, ‘no, no, it was in Menorca,'” she stated.
The former MP highlighted that there are “two fact-checks that deny reports of a party.”
“One from the main Spanish television stating it’s false that there was a party in Ibiza. Another fact-check from Expresso stating it’s false that there was a party,” she emphasized.
She added: “The vessels stopped in Menorca to wait for each other, coming from Barcelona, some held back by bad weather. There was no disembarkation in Menorca. No one disembarked in Menorca, nor was there a party.”
Joana Mortágua also clarified the news stemming from two videos circulating online, stating that one was “a party that took place in Barcelona before the embarkation, a charity event in favor of Palestine.”
“It was a party that was part of the cultural programming for Palestine, a concert before the embarkation,” she declared.
The second video “features an activist on one of the vessels saying that the fact one of the crew sings well and another plays well makes the journey a bit more lively.”
“None of this compares to a midnight cruise party in Ibiza,” she noted.
Flotilla Stopped in Ibiza? “It’s False”
Chega MPs and several public figures claimed that activists from the Global Flotilla Sumud stopped in Ibiza or other Balearic islands for night parties, but the video shared by some is prior to the Barcelona departure.
Lusa Verifica concluded: It is false that activists from the Global Flotilla Sumud, a humanitarian initiative heading towards the Gaza Strip, took advantage of a technical stopover in the Balearic islands to attend night parties in Ibiza or any other island. The videos shared online are from an initiative held in Barcelona, before the fleet’s departure, currently anchored in Tunisia.

During an interview on CNN, in a critical tone towards the accusations of populism directed at Chega, André Ventura lamented the “hypocrisy of some journalism” and asserted three times that the Flotilla to Gaza made a stop in Ibiza to join night parties.
