João Massano wins the 2nd round and is the new president of the Bar Association

João Massano’s Lista R secured 54.58% of the votes, while Fernanda da Almeida Pinheiro’s Lista U garnered 45.42%, as confirmed by a source from the Order of Lawyers to the Lusa news agency today.

During the first round, which concluded on March 19, Fernanda da Almeida Pinheiro was the leading candidate with 33.81% of the votes (6,496 votes), followed by João Massano with 30.95% (5,946 votes), leading to a subsequent second round.

José Costa Pinto’s Lista N was eliminated with 25.57% of the votes (4,912), alongside Ricardo Serrano Vieira’s Lista T, which received 9.67% (1,857). A total of 22,566 votes were recorded.

The elections for the head of the Order of Lawyers were called ahead of schedule by the current leader, Fernanda de Almeida Pinheiro. This followed the enactment of new Statutes, which introduced new positions within the structure, necessitating the appointment of their representatives.

This development sparked internal dissent that Fernanda de Almeida Pinheiro deemed divisive for the legal community. She believes that the elections offer a solution to this divide.

João Massano, in his campaign platform, emphasized the need to reunify the legal profession, criticizing the current leader for the perceived disunity. He specifically denounced divisions arising from whether members participated in the official defense protests or distinctions between those working in major law firms and independent practitioners.

Massano aims to implement a support program for the profession, addressing the isolation many lawyers experience, particularly those outside major urban centers.
