Jorge Carvalho elected president of the Association of Municipalities of Madeira

The vote took place during the first meeting of the Intermunicipal Assembly of AMRAM following the municipal elections of October 12, held in Funchal.

All the organs of the association, which represents the 11 municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, were unanimously elected.

“Today, only and solely, the commitment that we will indeed work for all municipalities in the region, and the unanimity in the constitution of the bodies also demonstrates how we intend to work in this body over the next four years,” stated Jorge Carvalho.

The social-democrat replaces the former mayor of Calheta, Carlos Teles, who completed three terms and is currently a PSD deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira.

The executive council of AMRAM is now led by the mayor of Funchal and includes councilors from Porto Santo (Nuno Batista, PSD), Câmara de Lobos (Celso Bettencourt, PSD), Calheta (Doroteia Leça, PSD), and Santa Cruz (Élia Ascensão, JPP) as board members.

The Board of the Intermunicipal Assembly is chaired by the Christian democrat Dinarte Fernandes (Santana), with socialist Olavo Câmara (Porto Moniz) and José Carlos Gonçalves, mayor of São Vicente, elected by Chega, as board members.

The Fiscal Council of AMRAM comprises the mayors of Machico (Hugo Marques, PS), Ponta do Sol (Rui Marques, PSD), and Ribeira Brava (Jorge Santos, PSD).

“We aim, above all, to represent all municipalities and the populations that comprise the municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira,” stated Jorge Carvalho, emphasizing that the goal for the 2025-2029 term is to address “all intermunicipal issues” and “seek solutions for the region’s development to occur harmoniously in all constituent municipalities.”

Jorge Carvalho, who served as the Regional Secretary of Education, Science, and Technology from 2015 to 2025 in governments led by social-democrat Miguel Albuquerque, won the race for the mayoralty of Funchal with an absolute majority, leading the PSD/CDS-PP coalition in the municipal elections of October 12.

The leadership of the 11 municipalities of Madeira is now distributed among five political forces, with PSD at the forefront, having won elections in two councils with individual lists (Calheta and Câmara de Lobos) and in four others in coalition with CDS-PP (Funchal, Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Brava, and Porto Santo).

The CDS-PP won independently in Santana, the PS retained Machico and Porto Moniz, the JPP held Santa Cruz, and Chega entered municipal leadership for the first time by securing São Vicente.
