“José Afonso” collection coin enters circulation on August 2

On August 2, 2023, Banco de Portugal will put into circulation a collector’s coin with a face value of €5, called “José Afonso”, as part of the “Portuguese Musicians” series. The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions, the treasury of Banco de Portugal and the stores of Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda.

On the obverse:

  • In the upper half, a representation of a hand playing a guitar;
  • On the lower left edge, the captions “2023” and “José Afonso”;
  • At the bottom right, the legend ‘Portugal’ and the denomination;
  • In the center, also on the lower edge, a shield of the national coat of arms.

On the reverse side:

  • In the central field, the profile of the singer José Afonso;
  • In the lower left margin, the legend ‘Mint’ and the author’s name.
  • The characteristics of this coin were approved by Ordinance No. 117/2023, published in
  • Diário da República, 1st series, No. 90, of May 10.

An issue limit of 30,000 coins with a standard finish has been set.
