José Luís Carneiro available to serve PS and calls for “deep reflection”

A statement issued by José Luís Carneiro calls for a deep reflection and a new phase to honor the history of the Socialist Party, following the electoral results and the decision of the PS’s secretary-general. This statement emphasizes inclusion, cohesion, and the unity of the party.

The former Minister of Internal Administration, who lost an internal contest to Pedro Nuno Santos about a year and a half ago, expressed his willingness to continue serving his party and Portugal. He stated, “as always, I am available to serve my party and to serve Portugal.”

Carneiro highlighted the importance of the Socialist Party’s contribution to political stability and the necessary reformist momentum. He affirmed the party’s commitment to sustainable economic growth, dignified work, poverty eradication, and inequality reduction, as well as strengthening the National Health Service (SNS) and public education.

Emphasizing the need for firmness in defending plurality and peaceful coexistence among all, irrespective of their convictions, Carneiro urged the importance of listening and giving voice to people both within and outside the party framework. He assured that “the Socialist Party, for its historical role in our Democracy, in the defense of Freedoms and Fundamental Rights, is and will continue to be the guarantee of a future focusing on security, well-being, dignity, and the prestige of institutions.”

Carneiro also addressed the work the PS must do to elevate Portugal’s role in the European Union. He remarked on the imperative to “support those who, in the name of PS values, will run in the upcoming municipal elections” during these particularly challenging times in Europe and the world.
