Sérgio Sousa Pinto stated on Sunday night, during a broadcast on CNN Portugal, that José Luís Carneiro “meets all the conditions” to become the next Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS). He suggested that Carneiro’s candidacy might provide the “new impetus” the socialists need, especially at a time when the party has experienced one of the most significant declines in its history.
“I have just learned—what I consider to be excellent news—of my comrade José Luís Carneiro’s willingness, someone I believe has all the conditions to move forward with the leadership of the PS and do something. Because the PS must lead the Left and propose solutions that are truly reformist and progressive for our country. Transformative in a positive way. This new impetus must come from a great openness to society,” he emphasized, hoping that Carneiro will be “successful in his unifying effort.”
Regarding the Legislative elections and the PS’s third-worst result in history, the socialist commentator highlighted that “at this moment, what matters is understanding the defeat, accepting it with democratic grace, and recognizing that it is not the country that is mistaken, it is us.”
“It is the PS that is wrong; this path does not serve us, another is needed. It must be embraced with confidence and energy by those who will change the leaders. This leadership has already demonstrated its effect; it is unlikely that the entire country is wrong and the PS is right, so things need to be put back on track,” he asserted.
