The Judicial Police (PJ) have reported the arrest of a suspect on Tuesday, outside of a crime scene, who allegedly acted without evident motive and on impulse during a period marked by numerous forest fires in the Guarda district, exacerbated by weather conditions favorable to fire spread.
The 29-year-old man is accused of igniting two fires using a direct flame in a grazing area with spontaneous vegetation formations.
PJ emphasized that in both cases, the fire risk was at its peak, and the fires were prevented from escalating significantly due to early detection by locals and the swift response from multiple firefighting brigades.
This arrest was made possible through close cooperation between the PJ’s Guarda Criminal Investigation Department and the Rural Space Ignition Reduction Work Group — Interior Center, which includes members from the Republican National Guard (GNR), the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), and the PJ itself.
The investigation is being overseen by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Guarda, and the suspect will undergo an initial judicial interrogation for the imposition of preventive measures.
