A juvenile hoopoe (Upupa epops) and a hedgehog were collected by the National Republican Guard (GNR) Territorial Command of Castelo Branco, through the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA) of Covilhã, on May 26.
“During a patrol,” a statement released to the press on Wednesday indicates, “SEPNA members were alerted by locals that the juvenile hoopoe was in the locality of Teixoso and was unable to fly.”
“As part of the same operation, a local resident reported that a hedgehog was found on a public road in the city of Covilhã,” and thereby, “the soldiers immediately went to the locations, where they undertook measures to collect both animals.”

The juvenile hoopoe and the hedgehog were delivered to the Wild Animal Recovery Center (CERAS) in Castelo Branco for “health monitoring, recovery, and subsequent release into their natural habitat.”
