King D. Dinis remembered in 4 days of medieval music at Leiria Castle

The songs and poetry written by King D. Dinis are the focus of a medieval music artistic residency at Leiria Castle until Saturday. The event includes open rehearsals, discussions, and concerts, featuring special guest Eduardo Paniagua from Spain.

Paniagua, a musician and researcher specializing in Iberian medieval music, particularly the works of King Alfonso X, is the guest of honor at this event part of the Leiria Medieval Music Cycle.

Starting today and running until Saturday, Eduardo Paniagua is engaged in a creative residency at Leiria Castle with the ensemble The Wandering Bard, which includes Ricardo Alves Pereira, Esin Alves Pereira, baritone Jorge Luís Castro, and multi-instrumentalist Baltazar Molina.

Together, they are preparing for a concert scheduled for Saturday at 18:30, titled ‘Que mui gram prazer que eu ey,’ where they will present new works inspired by the creations of D. Dinis, the Troubadour King (1261-1325).

The process features open rehearsals every morning, a discussion on the poetic-musical work of D. Dinis and the medieval sources that underpin it, such as the Sharrer Parchment and the Galician-Portuguese songbooks, and a mini-concert by Eduardo Paniagua.

This initiative is part of the programming by the municipality of Leiria commemorating the 700th anniversary of D. Dinis’s death.

The organization, led artistically by Ricardo Alves Pereira and Esin Alves Pereira, states that this artistic residency “will be one of the highlights of this year’s programming, inviting the audience to dive into the sound and poetry of one of the most remarkable figures in Portuguese medieval history: King D. Dinis, the Troubadour King.”
