The songs and poetry written by King D. Dinis are the inspiration for a medieval music residency at Leiria Castle, ongoing until Saturday. This event features open rehearsals, discussions, concerts, and the special participation of Spanish musician and researcher Eduardo Paniagua.
Paniagua, an expert in Iberian medieval music, particularly the works of King Alfonso X, the Wise, is the guest of honor at the Leiria Medieval Music Cycle’s offering.
From today through Saturday, Eduardo Paniagua will be in a creative residency at Leiria Castle with the ensemble The Wandering Bard, featuring Ricardo Alves Pereira, Esin Alves Pereira, baritone Jorge Luís Castro, and multi-instrumentalist Baltazar Molina.
Together, they are preparing Saturday’s concert at 18:30, titled ‘Que mui gram prazer que eu ey’, where new works inspired by the compositions of King D. Dinis, the Troubadour King (1261-1325), will be performed.
The process includes open public rehearsals every morning, a discussion on the poetic-musical works of D. Dinis and the medieval sources that support it, such as the Pergaminho Sharrer and the Galician-Portuguese songbooks, and a mini-concert by Eduardo Paniagua.
This initiative is part of the programming by the municipality of Leiria, commemorating the 700th anniversary of King D. Dinis’s death.
According to the organizers, under the artistic direction of Ricardo Alves Pereira and Esin Alves Pereira, this artistic residency “will be one of the highlights of this year’s programming, inviting the audience to immerse in the sound and poetry of one of the most significant figures in Portuguese medieval history: King D. Dinis, the Troubadour King.”
