“Kisses” to Isabel Moreira Parliament stage of ‘complaints’ and ‘reprimands’

The parliamentary debate on Thursday regarding the fires was highlighted by unusual moments involving Isabel Moreira.

During the session, the Socialist Party MP reported gestures directed at her by the vice-secretary of the Assembly of the Republic, Filipe Melo, from Chega.

Later, she left the Parliament while André Ventura was speaking, and upon her return, she announced a mobile phone was forgotten in the bathroom.

While her first complaint was supported by colleagues from Livre and PS, her latter intervention drew a reprimand.

Isabel Moreira accused Filipe Melo of “sending kisses” during the session.

The first unusual moment occurred when the PS MP complained that Filipe Melo “sent kisses” to her.

“Mr. President, the vice-secretary to your left [Filipe Melo] is making mouth gestures sending me kisses and gesturing with his finger over his nose, as if saying, do not tell,” stated the MP, emphasizing, “There are limits, Mr. President, there are truly limits.”

Jorge Pinto from Livre confirmed Isabel Moreira’s accusation, stating that the gestures “occurred today, occurred yesterday [Wednesday], and it is an absolute disrespect for the functioning of this house.”

Pedro Delgado Alves, also from PS, referred to the “inappropriate, unacceptable behavior of one of the members [of Parliament], which jeopardizes impartiality in conducting the work.”

Aguiar Branco recorded the complaint.

The president of the Assembly of the Republic stated he did not witness the behavior and that the Committee of Transparency and Deputies’ Statute “will have to express an opinion.”

“I record it and will send it to the committee,” he indicated, adding that the analysis will be done “in due time and place.”

Isabel Moreira leaves and Chega attacks.

Moments after her complaint, Isabel Moreira again became a focus of the session.

As André Ventura, leader of Chega, was speaking in Parliament, the Socialist MP stood up and left the room. This happened as Ventura stated that “arsonist is a terrorist” and should be imprisoned “preferably forever.” The moment did not go unnoticed by Chega’s MP, who accused her of “cowardice.”

“Leaving the room signals personal and political cowardice when someone confronts them with the truth,” he remarked.

Earlier, while discussing the matter, Isabel Moreira directed part of her words at Chega, accusing them of exploiting “the tragedy of the fires” to spread lies.

Isabel returns, with a notification earning her a reprimand.

After this incident, and upon returning to Parliament at the end of the voting period, the Socialist MP requested to speak to leave “information that may be useful” to the deputies.

“In my quick departure earlier, I noticed that some lady MP perhaps left a mobile phone in the bathroom,” stated Isabel Moreira.

Her intervention earned a reprimand from Marcos Perestrello, the vice-president and Socialist MP conducting the session at the time.

“I think your intervention, excuse me for saying, was very inappropriate. I consider it inappropriate, useless, and disrespectful to the chamber,” said Marcos Perestrello.
