The leader of the Socialist Party (PS) asserted on Tuesday, September 9, that the labor law amendments proposed by the Democratic Alliance government represent “a grave civilizational regression,” urging “a civic upheaval and the mobilization of all citizens who want a progressing nation that doesn’t move backward.”
José Luís Carneiro addressed journalists from the UGT headquarters in Lisbon after meeting with the trade union center.
According to the socialist leader, “the government must carefully consider, and the prime minister must thoroughly reflect” on whether to proceed with these changes, as “nothing justifies them.”
“Neither the economy, nor the unemployment levels, nor the competitiveness of Portuguese companies. There is no rational factor that justifies these options,” he stated, adding that “nothing could be leveraged.”
The best course, according to José Luís Carneiro, “is to freeze these intentions and not focus on matters that were not part of the electoral program, nor were they present in the elections.”
