
The SNCPG issued a statement remembering Álvaro Laborinho Lúcio for his kindness and dedication to justice in its broad sense, both as a national minister and in various roles where he contributed his expertise and humane approach for a better functioning of the justice system.
Álvaro Laborinho Lúcio passed away at his residence on October 23 at the age of 83, leaving a void in the Portuguese justice system, according to the union.
Born on December 1, 1941, in Nazaré, Laborinho Lúcio served as Secretary of State for Judicial Administration and Minister of Justice in 1990 under Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva, and as the Minister for the Presidency for the Azores in 2003 during Jorge Sampaio’s presidency.
He held several important positions including Procurator of the Republic at the Court of Appeal of Coimbra, Inspector of the Public Ministry, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, and was Director of both the Judicial Police School and the Center for Judicial Studies.
More recently, he was part of the Independent Commission for the Study of Sexual Abuse of Children in the Portuguese Catholic Church.
