Lack of INEM helicopters reveals “system fragility,” says ANTEM

The ANTEM warns that in addition to the scarcity of Advanced Life Support (SAV) units and providers, the absence of aerial resources to ensure a balanced response in emergencies, especially in more remote regions, further weakens the medical emergency system, stated the association in a press release.

According to ANTEM, the lack of SAV units directly compromises the quality and efficiency of medical emergency responses, putting the lives of many patients at risk, especially those in critical situations.

“The suspension of aerial operations and the lack of SAV units represent a significant threat to the population’s safety. The medical emergency system is experiencing a critical moment, and the lack of immediate response endangers lives,” stated Paulo Paço, president of ANTEM, as quoted in the release.

Paulo Paço stated that authorities “must act urgently to ensure the population has access to quality emergency medical care, particularly in areas where rapid response is crucial to saving lives.”

ANTEM calls for an immediate solution to ensure the continuity of emergency medical services and appeals to the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM) and the responsible entities to take necessary measures to ensure the operation of emergency helicopters and reinforce the availability of SAV units nationwide.

Earlier this month, INEM assured that it had alternative scenarios in place should the contract for the four emergency medical helicopters fail to come into effect on July 1 due to the Court of Audit’s lack of approval.

The international public tender for the hiring of INEM’s medical emergency helicopter service was awarded to Gulf Med Aviation Services Limited, based in Malta, for approximately 77.4 million euros.

The company will operate four helicopters on a 24-hour basis, ensuring air medical emergency services until 2030.

The winning company has until July 1 to have the helicopters operational for INEM.
