“Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people around the world,” stated Gaga during her acceptance speech for the first award of the evening. “Being an artist is a discipline and an art to reach someone’s heart, where it takes root, reminding them to dream,” she added at the UBS Arena.
The VMA is being hosted by LL Cool J, who kicked off the event with a relaxed vibe.
In addition to Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were also vying for the title of Artist of the Year, and the two hold the record for the most awards in VMA history, with 30 accolades each. Gaga’s victory leaves them tied for another year.
Mariah Carey will receive the 2025 Video Vanguard Award. Previous winners include Katy Perry, Shakira, Beyoncé, and Madonna.
Busta Rhymes will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary Award during the program, while Ricky Martin will be honored with the first-ever Latin Icon Award. Both will perform.
The lineup of performers at the event, which is being broadcast by CBS for the first time and simultaneously by MTV, includes Conan Gray, Tate McRae, Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Alex Warren, J Balvin, Sabrina Carpenter, and sombr. The 2025 MTV VMA will also be available for streaming on Paramount+ in the United States.
