Lagos. Arrested after holding woman hostage on a balcony under threat of a knife

A 50-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday after holding his partner hostage under the threat of a knife on a first-floor balcony in Lagos.

The alert was issued mid-afternoon today, with officers from the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) finding the aggressor “restraining a woman with one arm, holding a large knife in the opposite hand, and making death threats,” according to a statement from the security force.

As “the execution of the threats seemed imminent and to safeguard the victim’s life,” the police “entered the residence.” However, the woman managed to free herself and jumped “from the balcony to the street.”

Shortly after, the suspect imitated her action but was handcuffed and arrested at the scene.

The victim, who fell “violently to the ground,” was transported to a hospital and is “out of danger and undergoing additional diagnostic tests.”

The man also received medical attention for minor injuries. According to the PSP, he is expected to appear in court this Thursday.

The authorities noted that “there were no previous records of domestic violence between the individuals involved.”

This operation was conducted by the Faro District Command of the PSP, through its Lagos police station.
