Luís Montenegro indicated that if the Constitutional Court (TC) finds any provision not fully aligning with constitutional principles, the majority he represents will acknowledge the decision and seek a legal solution that respects the Court’s ruling.
However, he emphasized the resolve to achieve their goals, stating, “One thing is very clear: we will not abandon our objective, even if the Court requires some amendment to the law.”
Speaking to journalists at the inauguration of the 633rd edition of the Feira de São Mateus in Viseu, the Prime Minister noted that the law on foreigners has not yet been debated in Parliament, which is expected to occur at the start of sessions in September.
“We are awaiting the Constitutional Court’s decision, expected soon,” said the Prime Minister, expressing confidence that the parliamentary solutions comply with the Constitution, while acknowledging that judges often differ in opinion, yet he will “await calmly.”
“If, as expected, there is no noncompliance, our goal remains to introduce a new law to bring regulation and dignity to immigrants seeking work and valorization in Portugal, which we need,” he stated.
The Reprivatization of TAP
When questioned about the TAP privatization process, following some issues raised by the President, Luís Montenegro confirmed the government had responded, leading to the diploma’s promulgation by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“We will move to the next phase, approving the specification document, a key element for initiating the proposal process,” continuing, “it is crucial to stress that our objective is to secure a future, viability, and sustainability for our national airline, aligning with Portugal’s strategic interests, which we are pursuing naturally.”
