Gonçalo Oliveira, 21, president of the Lagoa Social Democratic Youth (JSD), was identified as one of the five fatalities in a Sunday accident on the National Road 266 (EN266) in Monchique. The news was announced by the PSD/Algarve president, Cristóvão Norte, on Facebook.
“In today’s tragic accident in Monchique, which claimed five lives, Gonçalo Oliveira, who just yesterday celebrated his twenty-first birthday, has passed away. It’s an incredibly sad and moving moment,” it states.
The president of JSD Lagoa is remembered as “a very lucid, dedicated young man, with a contagious civic engagement and unparalleled generosity. He was studying law and had his whole life and dreams ahead of him. It was a privilege to listen to him, to be his companion, even if that pleasure was so brief.”
“As President of PSD Algarve, I declare institutional mourning and extend my condolences to all the family and friends of Gonçalo, as well as to all those who lost their lives,” he concludes.
The PSD Lagoa also took to social media to express their “deep sadness and grief.” “We announce the passing of our dear Gonçalo Oliveira, leader of JSD Lagoa and candidate for municipal councilor in the upcoming local elections. His generosity, kindness, fighting spirit, and good humor will remain forever in our memory. He will leave a void in our hearts, and his life example, despite being so young, will be an inspiration to others,” the page states.
A vehicle went off the road this Sunday on National Road 266, in the Monchique municipality, Faro district, resulting in the death of all five occupants.
The victims were found charred after the accident also led to the spread of a fire in the surrounding forest, which was promptly controlled. The Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Republican Guard (GNR) was called to the scene to determine the circumstances of the accident.
