Legionella detected in a nursing home in Lagos (no recorded infections)

The institution has announced on its website that no symptoms associated with Legionnaires’ disease have been reported among its users or workers so far.

The social solidarity institution confirmed that the bacteria ‘Legionella spp.’ was detected during the surveillance program for Legionnaires’ disease by the Local Public Health Unit.

The Misericórdia de Lagos stated that technical services have “taken immediate measures” to eliminate and control the risk as recommended by public health authorities.

Efforts are also being made to swiftly normalize the operations of the São João Batista nursing home, located in the municipality of Faro district.

According to the Misericórdia de Lagos, the nursing home “meets all safety and health conditions” for its users, workers, family members, and visitors.

Legionnaires’ disease, caused by the bacterium ‘legionella pneumophila’, is contracted by inhaling water vapor droplets (aerosols) that are small enough to carry the bacteria into the lungs, depositing it in the pulmonary alveoli.
