Legislative. MPT expresses support for AD and runs in Madeira and Azores

Today, the MPT announced in a statement that it will not formally join the coalition but “expresses its political and institutional support for the candidacy led by Luís Montenegro, believing that Portugal’s future demands responsibility, vision, and the ability to converge.”

“This decision represents a clear commitment to the Portuguese: actively contributing to a governance project that sets the country on the path to sustainability, stability, and intergenerational justice,” the statement explains, advocating that “it’s time to unite efforts around a solid, comprehensive governance solution focused on the common good.”

The party stated that the decision arose from a “deep internal reflection following the challenge posed by the PSD” and was “made without any negotiation for positions, roles, or personal interests.”

The MPT also noted it will “actively participate in the electoral campaign,” and some of its proposals will be included in the electoral program of the AD – PSD/CDS coalition. It further mentioned it would respond “positively whenever called upon to participate in post-election actions.”

The party additionally argued that “at a time when the country faces noise, instability, and populism, a calm, strong, and responsible response is necessary.”

“For the MPT, that response is the candidacy of the AD – PSD/CDS Coalition,” the note reads, also highlighting that “this alliance [constitutes] an opportunity to positively influence national public policies by introducing a green and sustainable dimension into the debate and governance practice.”

The MPT revealed that “it already had candidacies ready for all 22 electoral circles,” but chose to “withdraw from the circles of mainland Portugal, Europe, and Outside Europe, in the name of union and the greater interest of Portugal.”

Thus, the party will only present candidate lists for deputies in the Madeira and Azores constituencies, as confirmed to Lusa by the MPT president, Pedro Soares Pimenta.

In the last legislative elections, in March of last year, the MPT participated as part of a coalition with the now-defunct Aliança, garnering over 4,200 votes, which did not reach 0.1%.
