Leitão has made “very significant progress” in the position to win Lisbon.

During a campaign event in Estremoz, Évora district, José Luís Carneiro was questioned about the recent Expresso/SIC poll indicating a tie for the Lisbon City Hall, with Carlos Moedas’s support declining and Socialist Alexandra Leitão catching up with the current mayor in voter intentions.

Carneiro noted that polls are “snapshots in time” and mentioned the dynamic nature of reality, expressing his anticipation to see how voters, and especially the undecided, will make their choices.

“However, it is evident that three months ago, six months ago, nobody would have said that the Socialist Party and Alexandra Leitão would be in this position, suggesting the possibility for the Socialist Party to win the City Council, which is a significant advancement compared to the situation three months ago,” he stated.

In the Alentejo region, where Chega gained ground in recent legislative elections, Carneiro emphasized the importance of addressing the territories’ needs.

“For these territories, there are public policy solutions and governance models that must be adapted to specific needs,” he argued.

For the PS leader, his party best addresses people’s needs by balancing two values.

“The value of freedom, autonomy, responsibility, with the value of equality and social justice,” he declared.

Carneiro, accompanied by José Daniel Sadio, the current and running candidate for Estremoz City Hall, praised Sadio as “a good example of a Socialist mayor who demonstrates how to solve people’s problems.”

“Because when people find solutions in democratic life, when they find answers to their problems, they naturally trust their political actors, their political representatives,” he stated.
