The Benfica SAD has confirmed the receipt of two qualified participation notices from Jean-Marc Chapus and Elliot Holton Hayes, regarding voting rights associated with shares representing 5.24% of the company’s share capital. This announcement was disclosed today by the Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM).
Previously, the 753,000 shares held by Vieira, corresponding to 3.28% of the sports society, had been seized by Novo Banco, which was seeking the recovery of 7.5 million euros from a loan given to Promovalor.
Last Wednesday, Benfica announced its intention to seek the annulment of the auction that resulted in the sale of these shares for 7.07 euros, citing lack of notification regarding its right of first refusal.
The latest statement reveals that the club has yet to receive any notification concerning its right of first refusal in the transaction of the specified shares. As a precaution, the club has requested the annulment of the sale, noting that it has not received any official response regarding this appeal.
The Benfica SAD is conducting inquiries to determine whether the statutory provisions concerning the acquisition of Benfica SAD shares by competing entities are applicable in this case.
Additionally, on Thursday, during unrelated testimony in the ‘Saco Azul’ case, Vieira criticized the club’s management, describing it as “incompetent” for failing to consult him to secure the purchase of the shares, thereby preventing their transfer to the now identified American fund, with a total investment of 5.33 million euros.
