The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, stated on Thursday that Pope Leo XIV now holds “the responsibility of inheriting and continuing the legacy and example set by Pope Francis” and extended “special greetings to Portuguese Catholics.”
“Today is a significant day for the world — and not just for Catholics — with the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. It is now his responsibility to inherit and continue the legacy and example set by Pope Francis,” the socialist leader wrote on the social network X.
“I extend special greetings to Portuguese Catholics, who witness this moment with faith, a sense of community, and renewed hope,” he added.
Pedro Nuno Santos also expressed his wish that, “in a time of uncertainty and conflict,” the new Pope “can be a beacon of peace, dialogue, and human dignity,” emphasizing that these are “principles that concern both believers and non-believers and should inspire the entire world.”
Hoje é um dia importante para o mundo — e não apenas para os católicos — com a eleição de Sua Santidade o Papa Leão XIV. Cabe-lhe agora a responsabilidade de assumir e prosseguir com o legado e o exemplo do Papa Francisco.

It should be noted that American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected Pope by the 133 voting cardinals after two days of conclave and assumed the name Leo XIV.
