Leo XIV is “the Pope that the Church and the world need,” says the Patriarch of Lisbon.

“We are filled with great joy at the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. These are particularly intense moments that renew our commitment to the Church, always guided by the shepherds chosen by God to lead us to eternal life,” stated Rui Valério in a message released late in the afternoon.

For the bishop of the diocese of the Portuguese capital, “there can be no other response from the entire Patriarchate of Lisbon than to give thanks to God for this great gift.” He therefore invites diocesan members to “embody this thanksgiving” during a Mass celebration on Friday, May 9, at 21:30, at Lisbon Cathedral.

“I also ask that Masses be celebrated with thanksgiving for this intention in all churches. It would be good for church bells to ring out in celebration,” adds Rui Valério, expressing “effective and affective unity with Pope Leo XIV.”

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected Pope today by the College of Cardinals on the second day of the conclave following Pope Francis’s death on April 21.

The new Pope, who has taken the name Leo XIV, was previously the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a position held since April 12, 2023.

Considered a progressive or reformist, he was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in the Consistory on September 30, 2023.

Born in Chicago, United States, the new Pope has Spanish ancestry, holds Peruvian nationality, and is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine.
