The festival will extend until Sunday, featuring a “great tribute” to the Algarve writer, emphasizing her work and contribution to literature through the “written, spoken, remembered, sung or discussed word,” according to the foundation’s website.
“‘The Earth’s Great Ships,’ an idea taken from Lídia Jorge’s book ‘O Vale da Paixão,’ titles the fifth edition of FLIQ. The narrative poem ‘Alfarrobeira do caminho’ constitutes the root of this return to the literary meeting in Querença, from where the foundation embarks to honor one of the greatest figures in national and world literature,” emphasized the organization.
Academics, readers, and musicians will participate in a range of activities starting today at 19:45 with a lecture by Viriato Soromenho-Marques, a professor at the University of Lisbon, titled ‘Literature between Memory and Utopia.’
Following the lecture, Lídia Jorge will speak, and at 21:00, music will take center stage with a concert by the Algarve Orchestra. The event will highlight the “world premiere of João Nascimento’s piece, titled ‘O Diamante de Milene,’ inspired by another book by Lídia Jorge, ‘O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas,’ commissioned by the Foundation to the composer,” stated the organization.
Participants in the event include Antonio Sáez Delgado, Carlos Reis, Catherine Dumas, Conceição Brandão, Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, José Carlos Barros, Maurício Vieira, Paulo Guerra, Pierre Léglise-Costa, Pilar del Rio, and Rui Diniz Monteiro, announced the foundation.
“Speakers are scheduled throughout the three days, with two conferences on Saturday. The morning session, ‘A escrita da Terra,’ at 10:30, will be moderated by Manuel Célio Conceição, an associate professor at the University of Algarve. The afternoon session, ‘Caminhos para o Mundo,’ at 15:50, will be moderated by journalist Maria João Costa,” it specified.
Other initiatives include musical readings by Amélia Muge and Filipe Raposo on Saturday at 21:00, and the documentary exhibition ‘Lídia Jorge: The Transformative Power of Literature,’ curated by Salvador Santos, editor and writer, are also planned.
FLIQ is under the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic, with institutional support from the Culture Unit of the Algarve’s Regional Coordination and Development Commission. It is supported by the Municipality of Loulé, the Union of Parishes of Querença, Tôr and Benafim, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the National Theatre D. Maria II, the foundation recalled.
Event partners also include the University of Algarve, the José Saramago Foundation, and the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, among others, announced the organization, revealing that from 2025, FLIQ will adopt a “biennial periodicity.”
