Life expectancy in Madeira increases by about two months.

Current data released by the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) indicates that the average life expectancy for men in Madeira is 75.87 years, while for women it is 82.08 years, marking a difference of about six years.

Compared to the 2021-2023 period, longevity in Madeira has increased by around two months, with an increase of five months for men and two months for women, according to the regional authority.

The DREM further notes that the national average life expectancy at birth was estimated at 81.49 years (2.23 years more than the regional estimate), with an increase of 0.32 years (four months) from the previous three-year period.

In the country, women can expect to live 83.96 years, and men 78.73 years, as stated by the DREM, adding that in the North, the greatest longevity is observed (82.13 years), contrasting with the Autonomous Region of the Azores, which has the lowest life expectancy at birth (78.33 years).

Regarding life expectancy at 65 years, in the 2022-2024 period, it was 18.56 years. Men aged 65 are expected to live on average an additional 16.19 years, and women an additional 20.14 years, with a difference of 3.95 years between these ages.

“Life expectancy at 65 years in Portugal reached 20.02 years for the entire population (1.46 years more than in Madeira): 18.30 years for men and 21.35 years for women. The highest longevity at 65 years is observed in the North (20.42 years), while the lowest is in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (17.83 years),” the report states.
