Lifted 2nd suspensive effect and competition of 117 trains is progressing

In a response to inquiries, an official source from CP confirmed that “the suspension effect” of a second challenge to CP’s public tender for the purchase of 117 trains has been lifted. This concerns the Spanish company CAF, following the lifting of a suspension involving the Swiss company Stadler in July.

“The process is underway. The deadline for providing the guarantee is running, for the subsequent signing of the contract,” responded the same official source, confirming that the contract signing with the consortium of the French multinational Alstom and the Portuguese company DST can proceed.

When asked about the expected timeframe for completing all formalities and signing the contract, the official source stated that “CP complies and will comply with the legal deadlines to which it is obliged,” without providing further information.

An official source from Alstom also said the company would not comment on the deadlines.

The process involves acquiring 117 trains for CP, marking its largest purchase ever, valued at 819 million euros. The contract was awarded on November 28, 2023, to the consortium led by Alstom for the supply of 62 urban trains and 55 regional trains.

A train factory is planned to be established in Matosinhos (Porto district), which, according to the company, is expected to create around 300 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs.
