Lina and Marco Mezquida release album ‘O Fado’ on Friday

The album titled “O Fado,” featuring works by Florbela Espanca and Lina_, does not aim to define the musical genre, as noted by Lina_ while speaking to the agency Lusa.

The only traditional fado selected is “Fado da Defesa” (António Calém/José António Sabrosa) from Maria Teresa de Noronha’s repertoire. For the first time, it includes the last sextilha, which was originally omitted due to technical limitations of the time.

The original poem was provided to the performer by the guitarist José Pracana, who passed away in 2016.

The album includes “Algemas” (Álvaro Duarte Simões) and the march “Lisboa dos Manjericos,” creations by Amália Rodrigues, “Alma” (Abel Ferreira da Silva/Suéli Costa), from Brazilian artist Simone, and “Senhora do Almortão,” from the popular songbook of Beira Baixa.

From María Dolores Pradera’s repertoire, the duo revitalizes “El Rosario de Mi Madre” (Mario Cavagnaro) and, also in Spanish, “No Volveré” (Manuel Esperón/Ernesto Cortázar), a work by the Mexican Lola Beltrán.

For this album, Lina_ mentioned she selected songs she already sang and those she wished to sing, ensuring the compositions were enticing for Marco Mezquida.

Another original piece is titled “Confidencial” (Miguel Torga/Lina_/M. Mezquida). “Gota d’Água” (Flávio Gil), “Não é Fácil o Amor” (Luís de Andrade/Janita Salomé), a creation by Janita, and “Ausência em Valsa” (Vitorino Salomé), by Vitorino, complete the lineup.

“An intimate album,” defined Lina_, highlighting “the sonic world” created by the pianist, who revealed that in another life, he wanted to be a fado singer.

Lina_ and Marco Mezquida knew each other through social media before meeting in Lisbon.
