Lisbon Airport is implementing a coordinated baggage handling plan with various entities. Airlines will begin contacting passengers with information regarding the delivery of their luggage, according to the airport management in an official statement.
ANA reported a significant influx at airline counters for rebooking flights, which were canceled on Monday due to a widespread power outage that affected the Iberian Peninsula and part of France, as well as ground handling services for baggage delivery.
Hundreds of passengers were waiting this morning to retrieve their luggage at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon. The luggage was not immediately unloaded during arrivals on Monday due to the blackout, as observed by eyewitnesses on the scene.
A passenger arriving from South Africa on Monday shared their experience of attempting to claim luggage and a foldable bicycle since their landing.
“The bags are not lost, but this is my second time in this queue since yesterday. Due to the electricity failure, the luggage was not sent directly to the carousel. It remained on the plane, and we were told we could pick it up later,” lamented South African passenger Martin Roberts.
Another passenger who arrived from the United States late this morning, and is scheduled to fly to Luanda, Angola, tonight, stated that he needs to retrieve his luggage to board the next flight.
“My suitcase and even my carry-on backpack went to the hold, and now I have to try everything to get them here. I’m coming from Newark (United States),” explained Justino de Melo.
The Angolan passenger faces a long queue with hundreds of others awaiting the return of baggage that was not transferred as usual to the luggage carousel after their plane landed.
