According to data from ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, 18 flights have already been canceled, with nearly 90% attributed to a strike, a source from the Sindicato das Indústrias Metalúrgicas e Afins (SIMA) has confirmed.
The source reported “endless queues,” a “very large” number of flights departing without luggage, and a high number of delayed aircraft today at the facility, due to the strike at Menzies, formerly Groundforce.
ANA released a notice on its website warning passengers about potential disruptions in airport operations due to the company strike, which affects various airlines including TAP. The notice advises passengers to contact their airline or travel agent before heading to the airport, noting that disruptions could occur from July 25 to 28, August 8 to 11, August 15 to 18, August 22 to 25, and August 29 to September 1.
Workers at Menzies began their second four-day strike today, part of a total of five scheduled for the summer, a peak tourism season. Both the company and the union have exchanged accusations of unwillingness to engage in dialogue.
The strikes have been organized by the SIMA and the Sindicato dos Transportes (ST) to address issues including base salaries below the national minimum, better wages, compliance with night work pay, among other demands. This second strike period, which began at midnight, will end at midnight on Monday.
