Despite the limited number of cancellations, an official source from the Metalworking and Allied Industries Union (SIMA) warned of “significant delays” and the possibility of further strikes in September and October if the ground handling company’s management does not agree to meet with the unions.
According to ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, there were five flights canceled among departures and arrivals, a figure the union acknowledges as “very low” but not reflective of the true impact of the second round of strikes, which began on Friday.
SIMA reiterated its criticism of the company for not allowing “a fair strike.”
“There is no intellectual honesty,” the source stated, accusing Menzies of calling in off-duty workers to replace those on strike.
This marks the second of four four-day strikes called for the summer, during the peak tourism season. Both the company and the unions accuse each other of lacking willingness for dialogue.
The strikes were organized by SIMA and the Transport Union (ST) to demand the cessation of basic salaries below the minimum wage, better salaries, and the payment of night shifts, among other demands.
On its website, ANA warns passengers of potential disruptions in airport operations due to Menzies’ strike, noting that the company “serves several airlines, such as TAP.”
The company recalls that strikes are planned for the periods of July 25 to 28, August 8 to 11, August 15 to 18, August 22 to 25, and August 29 to September 1, urging passengers to contact their airline or travel agent before heading to the airport.
