Lisbon and Odivelas: Death of dogs by electrocution? PAN questions Government

“These incidents raise justified concern due to the inflicted deaths, the suffering of the families involved, and the evident risk to the safety of more animals and people, including children, users of gardens, public spaces, and residential areas,” reads the petition submitted by PAN in the Assembly of the Republic, directed to the Minister of Environment and Energy.

The issue at hand involves the deaths of three dogs, allegedly due to electrocution from streetlamps in the parish of Parque das Nações, in Lisbon, and the municipality of Odivelas, which occurred on November 14 and 15.

“Given the seriousness of the facts, it is imperative to ascertain responsibilities, verify the existence of safety control failures, scrutinize any non-compliance by concessionaires or network managers, determine the degree of public oversight exercised, and gather information on the prevention and mitigation measures that the Government, through the competent authorities, determines to adopt immediately, as well as ascertain the due responsibilities,” argues the party led by Inês Sousa Real.

Besides the ministry, PAN also directed questions to the municipalities of Lisbon and Odivelas.

This case has also sparked reactions from opposition parties in the Lisbon City Council, who demand answers from the executive led by social democrat Carlos Moedas, reports Diário de Notícias.

Socialist councilor Alexandra Leitão demanded a “thorough investigation” into the circumstances that led to the death of the animals, considering it a “serious” case.

“It is crucial to clarify this incident. Public safety, including the maintenance of lighting, is a central responsibility of Lisbon City Council and a requirement to protect those who circulate in the city, people, and animals,” the councilor emphasized.

Similarly, representatives from PCP, Livre, and Bloco de Esquerda expressed their intention to question the mayor of Lisbon.

In response to Lusa agency, Lisbon City Council stated that services are conducting “an expert assessment of the equipment in question, together with E-Redes, to identify the specific causes of the incident.”

The incidents occurred near streetlamps in urban circulation areas, with police, firefighters, civil protection, and technical teams being activated.

E-Redes confirmed awareness of the cases and the initiation of internal investigation processes.
