Lisbon Chamber decrees three days of municipal mourning.

“The Lisbon City Council declares three days of municipal mourning for the victims of the tragic accident on the Glória elevator,” stated Carlos Moedas on the social media platform X.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to all the families and friends of the victims. Lisbon is in mourning,” he added.

The mayor was at the accident site early in the evening and later visited the Hospital de São José, where nine injured individuals were admitted, including five in serious condition and four with minor injuries.

The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed this Wednesday at 6:04 PM on Calçada da Glória.

The INEM announced that the accident resulted in 15 fatalities and 18 injuries, of which five are in serious condition and 13 are minor.

The government decreed a national day of mourning for Thursday.

The Glória elevator, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, along a route of about 265 meters and is highly frequented by tourists.
