Lisbon City Council plans 38 million for school works in 2026

The vice-president of the municipal council, Gonçalo Reis (PSD), responsible for Finance, disclosed that by 2026, four schools will be under construction with ten school projects underway, entailing a total investment of 38 million euros (ME).

In the realm of Education, the PSD/CDS-PP/IL leadership also suggests hiring 100 operational assistants, strengthening social support in schools, implementing a school mentoring program to promote academic success, and creating a platform for accessing educational indicators in Lisbon.

The executive outlines a budget of 78.2 ME for Education next year, reflecting an increase of 26.4 ME from the 51.8 ME forecast for this year.

The council earmarked 58 ME for Education in the 2025 budget.

For social support and facilities, an estimated 6.7 ME will be invested in nurseries next year, adding three more nurseries; 8.5 ME is designated for health centers; 3.7 ME towards supporting institutions, associations, and social initiatives; 1.8 ME for the Social Hotel Lisbon and 1.2 ME for reception centers.

In Sports, Gonçalo Reis announced 1.8 ME for refurbishments of sports complexes and 3.4 ME for supporting entities, associations, and sports clubs, alongside the Lisbon Active project aimed at promoting active lifestyles.

The municipal expenditure under “Social Support and Sports” is projected at 39.3 ME for 2026, marking an increase of 4.8 ME from the 34.5 ME anticipated for this year.

For 2025, the council plans a 38 ME investment in Social Rights, including 12 million for aiding the homeless and 8 ME for Sports.

The PSD/CDS-PP/IL leadership of the Lisbon City Council unveiled the proposed municipal budget for 2026, amounting to 1.345 ME, slightly below the 1.359 ME forecast for this year, described by the deputy mayor as “balanced, safe, and thoughtful.”

This marks the first municipal budget of the current mandate (2025-2029) led by the re-elected mayor, Carlos Moedas (PSD), governing Lisbon without an absolute majority.

During the previous term (2021-2025), the four budgets under the PSD/CDS-PP leadership (IL was not part of the municipal executive then) were approved due to abstentions by the Socialist Party (PS), while the remaining opposition – PCP, BE, Livre, and Citizens for Lisbon (elected under the PS/Livre coalition) – voted against.

The municipal budget for this year, 2025, envisaged an expenditure of 1.359 ME, marginally higher than the 1.303 ME forecast for 2024.

The current executive comprises 17 members, including eight representatives from the PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition, who hold designated responsibilities and govern without a majority. The opposition consists of four PS members, two from Chega, and one each from Livre, BE, and PCP.
