“Based on available sources, the passing of two victims was reported overnight in hospitals. This information is incorrect, as a record duplication was identified, correcting the account to one person’s death last night at Hospital de São José. Thus, there are 16 fatalities to lament, not 17 as reported this morning,” stated a note from the head of Lisbon’s Civil Protection sent to the Lusa agency.
Margarida Castro Martins also expressed regret over the error.
In an update provided to Lusa by health units in the morning, Hospital de São José received five seriously injured individuals, one of whom died overnight, another is in intensive care, and the remaining three are in a stable condition.
Hospital de Santa Maria reported treating eight injured persons, five of whom have been discharged, while the remaining three are divided across pediatrics (one child with non-severe injuries), one in intensive care, and one under observation in emergency services.
São Francisco Xavier Hospital admitted three injured individuals, one of whom is in critical condition and underwent surgery on Wednesday, with two others being polytraumatized and still hospitalized (two Portuguese and one South Korean).
Hospital Amadora Sintra attended to two injured people who have since been discharged, and a woman with minor injuries was discharged from Cascais.
Regarding the 15 casualties declared at the accident site, Margarida Castro Martins specified that there are seven men and eight women, all adults, including foreigners.
The municipal director stated that there is currently no information on their nationality or age, a matter for the Public Ministry to handle, which will validate and disclose the details to both families and the media.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the Instituto de Medicina Legal, where work is ongoing involving three teams, clarified the official this morning.
