Lisbon Metro (after all) closes at 11pm today

The Lisbon Metro will close this Wednesday at 11:00 PM due to the general strike. After this time, there will be no train circulation as no minimum services are scheduled.

Initially, the company had announced on its website that “due to the strike, it is expected that the transportation service will be halted and the metro stations will be closed from 6:30 AM on December 11 to 1:00 AM on December 12.” “The service will normalize from 6:30 AM on December 12,” it added.

However, in a social media post around 7:30 PM this Wednesday, it amended the information previously shared.

“Due to the strike, the company anticipates the halting of the transport service from 11:00 PM today, December 10 (Wednesday). The service will resume at 6:30 AM on December 12,” reads the post from Metropolitano de Lisboa on the social network X.

The arbitration tribunal unanimously decided “not to set minimum services for the circulation of compositions,” which includes the Lisbon Metro.

The company’s administration appealed the judicial decision, considering it to have a “particularly severe impact” and compromising “the essential mobility needs of citizens” in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, emphasizing the “structuring role” it plays in public transport. The decision is still pending.

Besides transportation, traffic in the capital will also face restrictions due to the planned demonstration as part of the general strike.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the PSP warned that “due to the General Strike scheduled for December 11, 2025, various constraints are to be expected in the movement of people and vehicles” throughout the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Therefore, they emphasize that everyone needing to travel to this area should “do so in a timely manner.”

“We also inform you to avoid traveling near the streets that will be part of the parade route to prevent being stuck in traffic congestion, as it will be necessary to close them during the demonstrators’ movement,” adds the authority in the same note.

The general strike on Thursday, December 11, was called against the Government’s draft labor law reform and will be the first stoppage to bring together the two trade union centers, CGTP and UGT, since June 2013, when Portugal was under troika intervention.

The proposed reforms by the Government in labor legislation cover various areas such as parenthood, dismissals, extension of contract terms, and sectors now subject to minimum services in case of a strike.

The stoppage is expected to affect various sectors, including health, transportation, education, media, waste collection, public offices, and others.
