João Cotrim Figueiredo expressed his concerns over the issue of wiretaps related to António Costa, noting that the figure of 300,000 wiretaps is alarming. “It may indicate either an indiscriminate use of wiretaps — which is one of the most invasive means of evidence production — or a lack of resources to obtain evidence in other ways,” he stated.
“More than the abuse of wiretaps, I am concerned about the confusion between the notion of autonomy and a lack of independence. There’s a lack of scrutiny in the Public Prosecutor’s Office. It is unacceptable that, case after case, the Attorney General’s Office and the Public Prosecutor’s Office as a whole do not clarify exactly what is at stake and why they made certain determinations that often lead to the expiration of proceedings. As we know, delayed justice is not justice,” he added.
