The socialist leader, speaking at the presentation of Luís Nobre’s candidacy for the presidency of the Viana do Castelo City Council, expressed it is “sad” to witness how society has changed.
“We were a cohesive society, believing in our values, both present and future. In such a short time, with winds blowing, many coming from abroad, encouraged and funded from outside, today they are undermining citizens’ confidence in their communities, undermining confidence in their political leaders, undermining confidence in those who represent the voice of local communities,” said José Luís Carneiro.
With the museum ship Gil Eannes as a backdrop, anchored at the fishing port of Viana do Castelo, the socialist leader stated he has traveled along National Road 2 (EN2) and maintained contact with the populations.
“They conveyed something so simple (the older generations), that they faced difficulties in their lives when, in the past, they lived through the hardships of the Estado Novo and had to flee from dictatorship, poverty, and inequalities. They had to escape the war in the Overseas and the colonial war,” he narrated.
José Luís Carneiro noted that the people who approached him said “what is at the heart of the Socialist Party is generosity.”
“What resides in the hearts of those who believe in their values is generosity because the generosity of socialists across the country is the fundamental value with which the future of our society is built. It is with generosity, not with hate, violence, divisions, and social rifts,” he emphasized.
According to José Luís Carneiro, the people he contacted also “have not forgotten the proposals and the progress that over the last 50 years” the PS has been capable of making.
“They told me that living conditions have transformed for the better, but it’s necessary, of course, to look to the future with new proposals, ideas, and projects for the development of our economy, for social cohesion, and for the prestige of our institutions,” he specified.
