The conclusions of the meeting will be presented in a press conference by the PCP’s General Secretary, Paulo Raimundo, at 6:00 PM at the party’s national headquarters in Lisbon.
In addition to the results of Sunday’s local elections, the communist leaders will also assess the social political situation and the PCP’s tasks.
This Sunday’s local elections resulted in the worst outcome ever for the CDU, which reduced its hold from 19 municipalities in 2021 to 12.
The coalition lost the district capitals of Évora and Setúbal and, out of the 19 municipalities it held in 2021, only retained eight: Barrancos, Cuba, Arraiolos, Silves, Avis, Palmela, Seixal, and Sesimbra.
The PCP’s General Secretary acknowledged the “negative result” and the CDU’s higher aspirations but noted “elements of resistance,” such as winning four new municipalities: Montemor-o-Novo, Mora, Sines, and Aljustrel.
Paulo Raimundo also highlighted “an evolution in CDU’s voting” on a national level compared to the legislative elections in May, mentioning that in those elections, the CDU had 183,000 votes nationally, whereas now it has 316,000.
“Are we deeply satisfied with the results? No. Would we have liked more? Certainly, and we believe the populations needed more strength from us. This is what we have, and this is what we’ll work with,” stated Paulo Raimundo on Sunday night.
