
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape in Funchal, Madeira.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 2, when the suspect approached the victim on a public street with the intent to rape her.
However, his attempts were thwarted when a group of strangers heard the cries of the 33-year-old woman and rushed to her aid.
The arrest was made following a warrant issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Funchal.
The man’s identity was determined based on forensic scientific evidence by the PJ, which confirmed that the DNA matched that of the attacker.
The detained individual will appear in court today for an initial judicial hearing to determine preventative measures.
