Loures explains eviction of mother and assures: Accommodation was provided

The Loures City Council provided clarifications regarding the incident of a mother who found her house in Quinta do Mocho locked upon returning from dropping off her baby at daycare on Wednesday.

In response to a request for clarification, the municipality stated that the decision to lock the doors was due to “several non-compliances.”

At issue were “an accumulated rent debt exceeding 6,000 euros”, as well as the situation where the woman “is not part of the family unit authorized to reside in the dwelling.”

“At the time of the action, the tenant himself was identified at the location and confirmed residing currently abroad, constituting a case of lack of effective residence and unauthorized leasing of the premises to third parties”, detailed the city council.

The clarification note added that “although no application was submitted under the Extraordinary Plan for Regularization of Unlawful Occupation of Municipal Housing, Loures City Council offered a temporary accommodation proposal in a hostel for the mother and her baby daughter, which was rejected.”

In this regard, the municipal executive also clarified that “housing alternatives in the rental market, with the possibility of financial support for the deposit and first rent,” were provided.

The situation was reported to Notícias ao Minuto by an employee of the local daycare that the one-year-old attends.

After returning home and finding it locked, the woman returned to the establishment “crying,” stating that the action had been carried out by the city council.

The employee further revealed that evictions occur “every week.” “They arrive, lock the door with belongings inside, and people can do nothing,” she added.

She also mentioned that “dozens of houses” are “sealed with an iron gate,” noting that “many times it’s people with rent up-to-date.”

Câmara de Loures nega

The Loures City Council assures that “mass evictions are not occurring, nor is there any daily eviction program” in the municipal housing district of Quinta do Mocho, as was claimed on Thursday by the Vida Justa movement.

It should be remembered that last month, the Vida Justa movement reported that an eviction order had been issued for 200 families in the municipal housing district of Quinta do Mocho, stating that “daily evictions” were happening.

In a statement, Vida Justa indicated that “a significant part of the evicted people in Quinta do Mocho, or those with eviction orders, are not in a default situation.”

In response to Vida Justa’s claims, Loures City Council denied the statements, referring to “falsehoods, omissions, and errors” regarding alleged eviction orders in Quinta do Mocho. They noted that out of 615 eviction procedures planned for the entire municipality, 269 involve residents of the Terraços da Ponte Development (formerly Quinta do Mocho).
