
A tram from Lisbon’s new fleet has been dedicated to honor André Marques, recognizing his professionalism and dedication to the company and city. The company highlighted that his loyalty and kindness were unparalleled.
André Marques, a tram driver from the Santo Amaro station, was operating the Ascensor da Glória at the time of a tragic accident that resulted in 16 fatalities and 22 injuries, marking him among the first identified victims.
His funeral took place this afternoon in Oleiros, his hometown, attended by the President of Portugal, the Minister of Infrastructure, the Mayor of Lisbon, and the President of Carris, coinciding with the release of the first report on the derailment.
The Ascensor da Glória derailed on Wednesday at 6:04 PM on the Calçada da Glória. Civil Protection confirmed that of the 38 individuals involved in the incident, 15 died on the day, and 23 were hospitalized or sought medical assistance, one of whom succumbed overnight.
The government declared a national day of mourning on Thursday, while the Lisbon City Council instituted three days of municipal mourning.
Operated by Carris, the Ascensor da Glória connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto over a 265-meter route and is a popular tourist attraction.
