The newly elected municipal council, which took office last Friday, conducted its first regular meeting for the 2025/2029 term today in a private session. This meeting aimed to distribute responsibilities and appoint the vice president. The PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition won the October 12 elections, securing four councilors, matching the number secured by the PS, with Chega electing one councilor.
According to a press release, President Luís Souto is tasked with overseeing Culture, Science and Higher Education, External Relations and European Funds, Environment and Health, Planning and Public Works, and Sports, Youth and Active Aging.
Rui Santos, chosen as vice president, will be responsible for Urban Services and public spaces, Housing and Social Development, Territorial Cohesion, Safety and Civil Protection, and Education.
Councilor Ana Cláudia Oliveira (CDS), the only member continuing from the previous administration, has been assigned responsibilities over Private Works, Markets and Fairs, and Legal Affairs.
Additionally, new councilor Pedro Almeida will handle Human Resources, Administrative Modernization and Digital Transition, Economic Development and Municipal Finances, Innovation and Mobility, and Transport.
The mayor has decided that councilors Ana Cláudia Oliveira and Pedro Almeida will serve in full-time, permanent, and exclusive capacities.
It was also established in today’s meeting that regular council sessions will occur biweekly, on the first and third Thursdays of each month, with the first sessions being public and a public intervention period starting at 5:30 PM.
The executive also acknowledged the six-month suspension of councilor Alberto Souto de Miranda, who is the brother of the current president and led the PS list. His position will be filled by Isabel Vila-Chã, the sixth candidate on the list.
