MAAT reached a record number of visitors in 2024.

The MAAT museum has reported a significant increase in visitor numbers for the past year, showing a 12.75% rise compared to the previous year, with a total of 337,000 visitors in 2023.

One of the standout exhibitions was Joana Vasconcelos’ solo show, “Plug-in,” which spread across various spaces at the MAAT, including outdoor areas, and attracted 260,000 visitors over nearly six months from late September 2023 to early April 2024.

Joana Vasconcelos was notably the first artist to win the EDP Foundation New Artists Award in 2000, the year of its inception.

Other artists who garnered substantial public interest included Ernesto Neto with “Nosso Barco Tambor Terra” and Vivian Suter with “Disco,” both presented in the Oval Gallery, according to MAAT.

Among the 380,000 visitors, 41,000 were students from various schools across the country, participating in more than 2,300 school visits, as reported by the institution.

In addition to exhibitions, MAAT offered a program that included performances, workshops, talks, guided tours, and specific activities for audiences with special educational needs.

The 337,000 visitors recorded by MAAT in 2023 demonstrated a return to pre-pandemic visitor levels, according to the museum.

This year’s program at the museum features solo exhibitions by international artists such as Jeff Wall, Miriam Cahn, and Cerith Wyn Evans, as well as Portuguese artists Ana Léon, Pedro Casqueiro, and Isabelle Ferreira.

There are also plans for the “Fluxes” exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, and the 15th edition of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award, showcasing works by finalists Alice dos Reis, Evy Jokhova, Francisco Trêpa, Inês Brites, Maja Escher, and Sara Chang Yan.
