The financial reserve of Macau saw a significant rise at the start of 2025, with its assets increasing by 7.17 billion patacas (781.2 million euros) in the first two months, as reported in the Macau Official Gazette.
The Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) highlighted that this is the strongest start to a year since January and February 2021, when the reserve surged by 47.4 billion patacas (5.17 billion euros).
Notably, the reserve reached a historic high of 663.6 billion patacas (72.3 billion euros) at the end of February 2021, despite the region grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of the end of February, the value of the financial reserve stood at 623.4 billion patacas (67.9 billion euros), a figure still trailing the previous peak.
The AMCM noted that 2024 marked the best year for the reserve since the pandemic, with an annual gain of 35.7 billion patacas (3.89 billion euros).
This annual increase was the highest recorded since 2019 when the reserve rose by 70.6 billion patacas (7.7 billion euros).
By the end of February, the extraordinary reserve amounted to 452 billion patacas (49.3 billion euros), while the basic reserve, equal to 150% of Macau’s public budget, was valued at 164.2 billion patacas (17.9 billion euros).
Macau’s budget for 2025 anticipates a 7% rise in total expenditures, amounting to 109.4 billion patacas (11.9 billion euros).
Macau’s financial reserve primarily consists of deposits and current accounts valued at 246.5 billion patacas (26.9 billion euros), credit securities amounting to 121 billion patacas (13.2 billion euros), and up to 249 billion patacas (27.1 billion euros) in subcontracted investments.
Investments in 2024 yielded almost 31 billion patacas (3.38 billion euros) for the financial reserve, reflecting a profitability rate of 5.3%, as reported by the AMCM at the end of February.
