Madeira Airport has already surpassed five million passengers this year.

Currently, Madeira Airport is served by 26 regular airlines connecting the autonomous region to 24 countries and 65 destinations. This year saw the inauguration of 12 new routes during the summer, including United Airlines’ link between New York and Madeira, which will continue in 2026.

The data was revealed during a ceremony at the airport located in the municipality of Santa Cruz, on the eastern part of the island, attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz.

According to ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal/VINCI Airports, which manages the country’s 10 airports, passenger traffic in Madeira has doubled over the past decade, increasing from 2.6 million in 2015 to over five million this year.

The company highlights that the region’s airport is among the most advanced in carbon management and was one of the first in the world to achieve Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation from the Airport Council International, considered a global benchmark for the aviation industry’s decarbonization efforts.

Ongoing investments at the airport include the installation of photovoltaic panels, which will provide around 30% of the facility’s electricity needs.
