Raul Perestrello, age 65, originally from Machico, Madeira, and a businessman in real estate and fine jewelry, announced his candidacy in a speech at a luxury hotel in Lisbon.
The businessman stated his candidacy for the presidency is driven by his belief that “the Portuguese deserve a future where those who work are valued,” the elderly live with more dignity, and the “economy grows from within based on merit, innovation, and social justice.”
“I want to present a modern, dynamic Portugal, and above all, one that is loyal and true to our roots. A Portugal that honors traditions, built with ambition and a vision for success,” he added.
Raul Perestrello expressed his desire for an “active presidency that unites instead of divides, listens to the youth, values immigrants, and upholds social justice without ideological noise,” emphasizing his independent candidacy.
“We cannot continue to only look inward. We cannot persist with criticism. Nor should we use poverty as a tool to justify past errors. We prove to ourselves our capabilities. It’s time to open Portugal to the world,” he stated.
When asked about gathering the 7,500 signatures needed to present his candidacy, Raul Perestrello stated he has “ample time” to collect them.
Regarding his ideological position, he mentioned his policy “neither leans left nor right” and that he intends to “be a president that collaborates with all parties” and the “entire population” for the “interest of all.”
“I am not here to support some more than others. I am here to improve the lives of all Portuguese, regardless of political colors,” he added.
The businessman also announced plans for a new campaign launch in Madeira next week, ensuring that his campaign will cover the entire country.
