Mafra launches tender to build Ericeira sports complex

The Mafra Municipal Assembly today approved the launch of the tender for the design, construction and operation of the future sports complex in the Ericeira Urban Green Park.

“The Ericeira Urban Green Park will bring a new centrality to the urban surroundings of the town of Ericeira, providing the region with an infrastructure that reinforces the response to social, educational, recreational and sustainability needs,” reads the proposal approved by the majority.

As well as rehabilitating the original fauna and flora, the project aims to “provide the area with facilities that serve the community and promote well-being”, with services and facilities that encourage a more active and healthy lifestyle, combating sedentary lifestyles and loneliness.

The project includes an ecological and landscape revitalization plan for the area and the development of sports infrastructures that contribute to improving quality of life.

On a 12-hectare area of the former campsite, the green park will have leisure areas such as a children’s play area, picnic area, dog park, amphitheater, café and restaurant and sports areas with paddle tennis, soccer and basketball courts, a secretariat and changing rooms.

The tender proposal for the design, construction and operation of the future sports complex in Ericeira’s Parque Verde Urbano provides for a monthly rent of one thousand euros to be paid by the future concessionaire.

The concession period is 20 years, the “expected period for amortizing the investment” to be made.

The area to be concessioned will have six paddle tennis courts, two tennis courts, one pickleball court, to be paid for by users, a basketball court and another soccer court and a skateboard and bicycle track, for free use, as well as changing rooms and a restaurant/bar.

At the Municipal Assembly, the mayor, Hélder Sousa Silva, said that the municipality has a project ready to go out to tender for the remaining area of the future Urban Green Park, with an intervention in the pine forest area and the creation of a parking lot.

In 2023, the municipality reduced the campsite from 18 to six hectares, reserving the remaining 12 hectares, corresponding to the area closest to the town’s urban fabric, for the future Ericeira Urban Green Park.

All users of the park with tents, caravans, mobilehomes or other equipment were forced to remove their equipment and leave for the park to undergo construction work, having reopened in the summer of last year with different operating rules than those that existed.
