Magnitude 4.5 earthquake felt on the island of São Miguel and Terceira

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake on the Richter scale was felt at 8:48 PM local time (9:48 PM in Lisbon) on Tuesday evening on the Azorean islands of São Miguel and Terceira.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued a statement indicating that the earthquake was recorded by the Seismic Network of the Azores Archipelago. The epicenter was located approximately 70 km southeast of S. Sebastião (Terceira).

“According to current information, the earthquake did not cause personal injury or material damage and was felt with maximum intensity III/IV on the modified Mercalli scale in the parishes of Candelária and Ginetes,” on the island of São Miguel, the statement noted.

The statement further disclosed that the earthquake was felt “with lesser intensity” in several parishes of São Miguel and Terceira.

“If the situation warrants, new statements will be issued,” clarified IPMA.

According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified as micro (less than 2.0), very minor (2.0-2.9), minor (3.0-3.9), light (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), major (7.0-7.9), great (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9), and extreme (when greater than 10).
