MAI ensures that “for several years now” there have been more members in PSP and GNR.

“To address this challenge [attracting young people to the police], we must consider an action next year that confirms the recruitment expansion policy, already practiced during the year 2025,” stated Maria Lúcia Amaral during the parliamentary specialty debate on the Government’s proposal for the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026).

To the deputies, the minister announced that this year 134 guards, 12 technical officers, 116 sergeants, 36 officers joined the GNR, and in December, the entry of 619 more guards is planned.

In the PSP, a course for 590 agents started this year, a course for another 32 officers began in October, and a competition for 200 chiefs opens in November.

According to the minister, the number of members in the National Republican Guard will increase from 23,077 this year to 24,485 in 2026, and the PSP currently employs 19,998 people, which will rise to 20,100 in 2026.

“In both cases, we are growing in the number of people working in the institutions,” she said, highlighting the “difficulty of attracting new generations to State functions.”

For the minister, this is “a crosscutting difficulty,” also present in the security forces, making the challenge for the future “so great.”

“For the first time in several years, we have managed to surpass the number of exits, particularly in the PSP,” she emphasized.
